How do I obtain an ACAT Assessment?
Prior to applying for Residential Care (permanent and/or respite) or being eligible to receive a Home Care Package, you require approval from the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT). To request an ACAT assessment you should phone My Aged Care Call Centre on 1800 200 422. They will ask a number of questions to ascertain the level of assessment required. An assessor will then arrange a time to carry out the assessment in your home. You may request approval for both In Home Care and Residential Care as part of the same ACAT assessment.
How long do I have to wait for an ACAT Assessment to take place?
The waiting time for an assessment varies and can be up to several weeks, however if the matter is urgent, an assessment can often be scheduled within a couple of weeks of your request. When requesting an assessment it is important to describe a ‘bad day’ for the person being assessed and to disclose all of their health issues and care needs.
Can I have an ACAT Assessment when I am in hospital?
Yes. We recommend that you request an assessment while you are in hospital so it takes place prior to you being discharged. Usually an assessment in hospital can be arranged at short notice, and by having the assessment in place it enables you to access In Home Care services or Residential Care immediately you are discharged.
